We’re at Eudex (European Defense Expo) 2026 in Essen, Germany. Essen is in northwest germany, not far from the Netherlands border. It is a very business-oriented town, there’s not as much to see or do from a tourist perspective as Nuremburg where Enforce Tac and IWA are held.
There were sadly almost no firearm-related booths at this expo but HK was there, and they had the HK 421 belt-fed that was first introduced in 2023. I don’t recall having the opportunity to examine this at earlier shows but it’s an impressive piece of hardware.
The HK 421 is a lightweight belt-fed machine gun developed by Heckler & Koch and first publicly shown in 2023. Chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO and derived from the company’s heavier MG5 general-purpose machine gun, it was designed under a project begun in 2017 to give infantry and special-forces units a more maneuverable weapon that still delivers sustained 7.62 mm firepower. This typically weighs a little under 19 lbs, depending upon the configuration. It replaces the heaver MG5 cast-steel and machined receiver with a lighter-weight stamped receiver and mates it to a polymer lower.
The HK 421 uses a gas-operated, rotating-bolt, open-bolt action with a three-position gas regulator for normal, sustained, and suppressed fire, plus a quick-change barrel and a hydraulic buffer that helps manage recoil so the weapon can be fired from standing or kneeling positions more readily than a traditional GPMG. This has a really slick MP7-style collapsible stock. Also note that the 421 is designed to have an optic as the primary aiming method. If you look carefully you will see surprisingly simple backup flipup sights given how sophisticated some backup sights have become these days.
Another thing I really like about this particular rifle is that the finish as well as the polymer lower components are in commie gray, which looks good on some guns and kind of tacky and toy-like on others. It’s hard to tell from the picture that this a dark gray color and not some version of the semi-gloss HK black. I’m glad they are using gray and not the horrific tan/yellow color HK sometimes uses on the MG5 and which I refer to admiringly as Flat Piss Scourge.
